Road crashes claim 29 lives in a day

Yesterday was a fatal day on the roads, with at least 29 fatalities and over 200 injuries reported throughout 10 districts.

In Tangail's Mirzapur upazila, a mother and her two children were among the victims who perished after being struck by a bus close to Pakulla bus station.

The deceased were named as Bashtoil villager Parvin Akter, 26, her son Sumon, 10, and daughter Sadiya, 8.

Parvin, one of the victims' family members, and her kids were on their way home yesterday morning after spending Eid-ul-Azha in a nearby hamlet with her father.

While the three were crossing the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the vicinity of the Pakulla bus station, a bus struck them, leaving Sadiya dead on the scene.

According to Monsur Mucha, assistant superintendent of Tangail police, Parvin and Sumon were transported to Tangail General Hospital where a doctor pronounced them dead.

A second incident in the Dulla Monsur neighborhood of Mirzapur upazila resulted in four fatalities and nine injuries. A Dhaka-bound bus collided with a halted truck that was carrying sand at 4:30 in the morning, according to authorities.

Alok Kumar Roy of Pirganj in Rangpur, Jakaria Islam of Barishal, Moazzem Hossain of Fulbaria in Mymensingh, and Shakhawat Hossain, the bus driver's assistant, were identified as the deceased.

Three family members were run over by a truck in the afternoon in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh, killing them all including a pregnant woman.

The fatalities were from Roymoni hamlet in the same upazila and were Jahangir Alam, 42, his wife Ratna Begum, 26, and their three-year-old daughter Sanjida.

A neighbor of the victims claimed that the three were going to the upazila town from their hamlet so that Ratna could receive medical attention. They were waiting to cross a road at around 2:00 p.m.

The father and daughter were instantly killed when a truck carrying onions ran them over.

Ratna, who was critically hurt, gave birth to a girl there before passing away, according to Mohammad Mainuddin Jahangir, the station chief of Trishal Police Station.

In the Khalkula area of Tarash upazila, Sirajganj, a bus crashed head-on with two lorries, resulting in four fatalities and five injuries.

The deceased were named as Abdul Aziz, 46, of Bagha, Rajshahi; Mirazul Islam, 32; Raihanur Rahman, 35; and Masud Hossain, 33; all bus passengers from Natore; Ishwardi, Pabna; and Gazipur.

Police cited villagers when they claimed that a bus headed for Dhaka was obstructing traffic on the Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway. Around 1:00 pm, the automobile collided head-on with the two trucks, resulting in the fatalities.

Four individuals were killed in a head-on accident between a car and a pickup truck in Bogura early one morning in the Kalerpukur neighborhood of Kahaloo upazila.

The fatalities were citizens of Naogaon's Dhamoirhat upazila: Md Tanser, 70, his son Md Tagor, 35, his neighbor Abdur Rahman, 35, and car driver Md Sumon.

According to Md. Ambar Hossain, OC of Kahaloo Police Station, the victims were driving from Naogaon to Bogura in the automobile.

Three individuals were killed in a head-on accident between a bus and a CNG-powered autorickshaw in Nabiganj upazila yesterday afternoon in Habiganj.

Bokul Begum, 62, of Nabiganj's Betapur village, Ehiya Chowdhuy Zaved, 24, also from that community, and auto-rickshaw driver Rabban Miah were named as the deceased.

Around 5:00 p.m., according to the police, an auto-rickshaw and a bus headed for Sylhet crashed head-on on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.

 

In a head-on collision between a car and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw in Sadar upazila's Ujanishar district yesterday midday, two individuals in Brahmanbaria died and four others were injured.

The fatalities were the auto-50-year-old rickshaw's driver Chan Badsha and its 45-year-old passenger Billal Hossain.

 

Three of Billal's family members and a police officer are among the four injured.

Around noon in Khansama upazila, Dinajpur, a motorcycle rider was murdered when a speeding truck struck his vehicle.

The deceased, 26-year-old Zakir Hossain, was from the upazila's Memberpara village.

Locals were cited by the police as saying that Zakir was riding his motorcycle home from his shop in Amtali Bazar when the accident occurred.

An elderly man was murdered and six other persons were injured in Jhenidah when a speeding truck struck a person hauling goods in the early morning hours near the Pirojpur bus stop area of the Kaliganj upazila.

The 80-year-old deceased Lokman Ali was from the same upazila's Khosalpur village. According to officials, every injured person was a human haulier passenger.

In the morning, a bus struck a rickshaw near Pantha Kunja Park in the Karwan Bazar neighborhood of the city, leaving one man dead and another hurt.
